“Hey! Come back here!”
The pitter patter of small feet echoed of the mostly empty sidewalk as the small girl bolted down the street with a man in tow. In her right hand was a crunched up twenty dollar bill and in the other was a brown leather wallet. Her worn out sneakers tapped hastily against the pavement as she took a sharp left turn downtown he alley way, her little pounding with adrenaline. Oh how she loved chases! The thrill! The excitement! Bolting down the dark alley the girl came to a screeching stop. Her eyes widened as she quickly surveyed her surroundings. The alley was a dead end! She whipped her head around as she heard the much heavier footsteps of the man. This wasn’t the first time pickpocketing had gone wrong, hell this wasn’t even the first time she’d been caught. But this man seemed angry.
Thinking fast the girl grabbed the dumpster lid, intending to climb inside to hide, but she paused. That wouldn’t work, he had seen her come in here, and he would check there immediately. She looked up and saw a firescape ladder above the dumpster, it was high but she was sure she could reach it. Climbing on top of the dumpster the girl hastily climbed. The building was only two stories high so reaching the rooftop was an easy feat. Once she reached the rooftop she peered down just in time to see the man make his way to the alley. Just like she suspected he lifted the lid of the dumpster and let out a string of curses as he stomped away. No doubt mumbling harsh words about the encounter all the way home.
Letting out a sigh Coco relaxed her shoulders. “Gracias a dios!” She thanked with a shaky breath. After a few moments she made her way back down to the dumpster. Leaping from the final step of the firescape ladder she landed on the metal dumpster with a loud metallic thud. Coco was blissfully unaware of the attention that the sudden bang brought to her.
